Robert Comtesse was a prominent Swiss politician who served as President of Switzerland.

Early Life and Career

Born to a notary and judge, Comtesse studied law in Neuchâtel, Heidelberg, and Paris. He practiced as a general practitioner in La Chaux-de-Fonds from 1869 to 1874.

Cantonal Government and Federal Council

In 1876, Comtesse was elected to the cantonal government, where he headed various departments. He also served as the head of government multiple times between 1880 and 1899. At the federal level, he was a member of the National Council (from 1883) and was elected to the Federal Council (Switzerland's government) in 1899.

Finance Minister and Presidency

As Minister of Finance, Comtesse played a pivotal role in establishing the Swiss National Bank in 1906-1907. He also held the positions of Minister of Justice and Police, Minister of Posts and Railways, and Vice President of Switzerland. In 1904, he served as President of Switzerland for the first time.

Subsequent Presidencies and Retirement

Comtesse was elected President of Switzerland again in 1910. After stepping down in 1912, he remained politically active. During World War I, he openly sympathized with the anti-war Central Powers and protested the invasion of Belgium. The war reinforced his pacifist beliefs and led him to support Switzerland's entry into the League of Nations.
