Henri-Irénée Marrou

Henri-Irénée Marrou was a French priest, church historian, and theologian.

Early Life and Education

Marrou was born on June 21, 1904, in Strasbourg, Alsace. He studied at the Catholic Institute of Paris, where he completed his theological studies and was ordained a priest in 1922.

Vatican Library and Manuscript Research

In 1922, Marrou was appointed to the staff of the Vatican Library in Rome, where he worked closely with Cardinal Giovanni Mercati, a renowned paleographer. During his tenure at the Vatican, Marrou studied paleography, the ancient art of writing, and began research on the early history of the Church of Antioch.

Return to Paris and National Library

In 1940, Marrou returned to Paris, where he became the curator of the Department of Manuscripts at the National Library of France. He held this position from 1942 to 1944.

Vatican Years and Later Career

In 1946, Marrou was再びsent to Rome, where he served as a research scholar until 1950. During this period, he continued his research on the early Church and published several notable works. After his return to Paris, Marrou continued to write and teach, becoming a respected figure in the field of Christian antiquity.
