The son of Grace Dorothy (Montanarella) and Robert Wallace Forster Sr., a circus elephant trainer, Forster displayed a passion for acting from an early age. He initially pursued a degree in history from the University of Rochester, but his love for the stage led him to switch to drama.
Career Beginnings
After graduating in 1964, Forster moved to Los Angeles and began his acting career with minor film and television roles. He made his debut in the 1967 film "Reflections in a Golden Eye." His breakthrough came in the 1969 drama "Medium Cool," which garnered critical acclaim.
Supporting Roles and Cult Films
In the 1970s, Forster established himself as a versatile supporting actor. He appeared in numerous action and horror films, including "The Black Hole" (1979). However, his true calling was in the cult B-movie genre. He starred in "Alligator" (1980), "Vigilante" (1983), "Delta Force" (1986), and "The Banker" (1989).
Critical Acclaim and Resurgence
In 1997, Forster's career was revitalized with his Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in "Jackie Brown." The recognition led to a resurgence in roles, including "Como Mike" (2002), "Mulholland Drive" (2001), "Me, Myself & Irene" (2000), "Lucky Number Slevin" (2006), and "Fire Wall" (2006).
