Early Life and Health Challenges

Robert was born as a large baby, just slightly shy of 5 kg. As he grew older, he became bigger and bigger. At the age of three months, he contracted whooping cough, which caused his weight to spiral out of control. It was believed that the coughing fits from the whooping cough caused damage to his thyroid gland. By the time he was 10 years old, he weighed 170 kg, and by 13, he weighed over 200 kg. Eventually, he had to drop out of school because he was unable to commute. Despite his immense size, old black and white photos from the 1930s and 1940s show a smiling Robert as a teenager. His jovial expression contrasts with his massive, shapeless body.

A Life of Struggles

Hughes' weight continued to increase over time. By the age of 20, he weighed 322 kg, and by 27, he reached 430 kg. He was no longer able to move independently and spent much of his time immobile. However, he found a way to earn a living by showcasing his extraordinary size. People willingly paid to see him at fairs, where he was transported on special equipment. Though he received offers from circuses and carnivals, he refused to become a professional spectacle. Hughes continually tried to lose weight, but his attempts were unsuccessful. Unfortunately, he lived in a time when knowledge about diets and specialized clinics for overweight individuals was limited. He struggled with his weight alone, with no professional support.

A Kind-hearted Individual

Those who knew Hughes described him as remarkably kind-hearted. He always had a smile on his face, valued friendship, wrote many letters, and was attentive to others. Sadly, his mother passed away when he was a teenager, leaving him in the care of his father, older brothers, and their wives. As the years went by, his weight continued to increase, reaching an astonishing 486 kg. His waist circumference was 305 cm, and his chest circumference was 310 cm.

Final Days and Legacy

In 1958, Hughes agreed to participate in the "Gooding Bros" show. While touring in Indiana, he contracted measles, and it proved to be problematic to provide him with medical treatment. The simple task of transporting Hughes to the hospital became the biggest challenge. As a result, he received treatment in a trailer parked at the hospital. Unfortunately, the treatment was unsuccessful, and his condition worsened after a week. Ultimately, Hughes could not be saved, and he died in his trailer. At the time of his death, he weighed 472 kg. He was laid to rest in Benville Cemetery in Mt. Sterling, Illinois. Over a thousand people came to bid farewell to Robert, and his tombstone reads, "Here lies the heaviest man in the world."
