Early Life and EducationRobert Lawrence Leonard was born on February 28, 1969, in Ridgewood, New Jersey, USA. He graduated from high school there and attended Fordham University before transferring to Columbia University's School of General Studies. Upon joining the Screen Actors Guild, he adopted the middle name Sean.
Career Beginnings
Leonard made his television debut in the series "My Two Loves" in 1986. He also appeared in the film "The Manhattan Project" that same year. In 1987, he began filming the series "Bluffing It" but left after a short period. In 1988, he starred in "My Best Friend Is a Vampire" and, in 1989, played a memorable role in the acclaimed film "Dead Poets Society," alongside Robin Williams and Ethan Hawke.
Breakthrough and Rising Stardom
Leonard's performance in "Dead Poets Society" catapulted him to wider recognition. He went on to star in films such as "Mr. & Mrs. Bridge" (1990), "Married to It" (1991), "Much Ado About Nothing" (1993), and "The Age of Innocence" (1993). In 1993, he appeared in "Swing Kids," for which he received a Young Artist Award nomination.
Television Success
From 1994 to 2004, Leonard continued to work prolifically in film and television, appearing in over fifteen roles. In 2004, he was cast in the medical drama series "House" as Dr. James Wilson. His portrayal earned him a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination in 2009.
Collaborations and Personal Life
During his time on "House," Leonard befriended co-star Hugh Laurie. He has also maintained a close friendship with Ethan Hawke since their days in "Dead Poets Society." Together with Frank Whaley and Steve Zahn, they founded the theater company Malaparte.
In 2008, Leonard married professional equestrian and executive director of West Coast Active Riders, Gabrielle Salick.
