Robert Marchand: The World's Oldest Cyclist
A Century of CyclingRobert Marchand, the celebrated French cyclist, lived an extraordinary life that culminated in him becoming the oldest cyclist in the world at the age of 108. Despite celebrating his 100th birthday on the track, Marchand humbly stated he wasn't seeking to break records but rather commemorate his milestone in a unique way.
Life and Career
Born in Paris, Marchand remained an avid cyclist throughout his 107 years. Standing at just 5 feet tall, he exuded an infectious sense of joy and modesty. His diverse career included stints as a firefighter, lifeguard, gardener, wine salesman, and boxer. After living in Venezuela and Canada, he eventually returned to France.
Cycling Legacy
Marchand's cycling journey began in earnest at the age of 67 in 1978. Training alongside men a third of his age, he possessed an unwavering determination. In 1984, he retired at the age of 89, but immediately embarked on the 600-kilometer Bordeaux-Paris race, completing it in 36 hours.
Record-Breaking Achievements
While Marchand no longer pursued extensive distances, his personal best remains an impressive 24.251 kilometers per hour. Despite the thrill of competition, he prioritized his health, ensuring his heart rate never exceeded 100 beats per minute.
Secrets of Longevity
Marchand attributed his youthful vitality to his unwavering joy in life. He lived alone but never lacked companionship. Regular cycling, consuming honey water during rides, and a remarkable genetic predisposition contributed to his longevity.
Scientific Marvel
Medical examinations revealed that Marchand's health parameters resembled that of a 55-year-old. Doctors attributed this to his positive outlook, which he summarized with a chuckle: "Some people when they reach 80 start playing cards and become sedentary. Not me. I've never been able to sit still."
Legacy and Passing
Robert Marchand ceased cycling at the age of 108 due to hearing loss. He passed away peacefully at the age of 109 on May 22, 2021, in the nursing home of Mitry-Mory, northeast of Paris. As the world's only cyclist over 100 years old to compete in races, Marchand's legacy as an inspiration to countless people around the globe remains unwavering.
