Biography of Robert (Norton) Noyce

Robert (Norton) Noyce, an American engineer and inventor, was born on December 12, 1927, in Burlington, Iowa. He was known for his significant contributions to the field of semiconductor technology and his role in the establishment of the Silicon Valley in Northern California.

Education and Early Career

In 1949, Noyce graduated from Grinnell College in Iowa with a Bachelor's degree. He then pursued further studies and obtained a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1953.

After completing his studies, Noyce worked at the semiconductor laboratory of William Shockley, the inventor of the transistor, from 1956 to 1957. Following this, he and seven of his colleagues left Shockley's company and founded Fairchild Semiconductor, one of the first electronic firms specializing in the production of silicon semiconductors. This venture played a significant role in the establishment of the Silicon Valley.

Inventions and Intel

During his time at Fairchild Semiconductor, Noyce, along with another inventor named Jack Kilby, independently invented the integrated circuit, also known as the microchip. This groundbreaking invention paved the way for the miniaturization of electronic devices and revolutionized the field of electronics.

In 1968, Noyce and his longtime colleague Gordon Moore founded Intel Corporation. Two years later, they developed the 1103 memory chip, made from silicon and polysilicon. This chip replaced the less efficient ceramic cores in computer memory devices. In 1971, Intel introduced the microprocessor, a single chip that combined the functions of a memory device and a processor. This innovation positioned Intel as a leader in microprocessor manufacturing.

Later Career and Sematech

In 1988, Noyce became the president of Sematech, a research consortium jointly funded by industrial capital and the U.S. government. The consortium aimed to develop advanced technologies in the American semiconductor industry.

Throughout his career, Noyce received numerous honors and awards for his contributions to the field of technology. He was known for his entrepreneurial spirit, technical expertise, and leadership in the semiconductor industry. Robert Noyce passed away on June 3, 1990, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the world of technology and innovation.
