Robert Salvatore: Fantasy Author of Renowned Universes

Early Life and Education

Robert Salvatore was born in Leominster, Massachusetts. His passion for literature, particularly fantasy, emerged during college after reading J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings." He earned a Bachelor of Science in Communications and later a Bachelor of Arts in English.

The Forgotten Realms Chronicles

Salvatore began writing fiction in 1982, penning his debut novel, "Echoes of the Fourth Magic," which was initially rejected by publishers. It was eventually published in 1990 after Salvatore's success with his Dark Elf trilogies.

His rise to prominence came with his novels set in the Forgotten Realms role-playing universe. Salvatore was involved in the Forgotten Realms literature project from its inception, and his first book, "The Crystal Shard," was a significant hit.

With over two dozen novels and several short story collections to his credit, Salvatore remains the most well-known and prolific author writing about the Forgotten Realms. Many of his books focus on his renowned character Drizzt Do'Urden, a drow ranger who rejects his heritage to fight for good. Two graphic novels have been adapted from the first two Dark Elf trilogies. Other notable series include "The Cleric Quintet" and "The Sellswords."

As one of the lead editors for the Forgotten Realms under Wizards of the Coast, Salvatore has overseen the multi-author series "The War of the Spider Queen." He also crafted the storyline for the Forgotten Realms video game "Demon Stone" (2004).

Star Wars Universe

Robert Salvatore's contributions extend to the "Star Wars" universe. He wrote "Vector Prime," the first book in the "New Jedi Order" series, and the novelization of the movie "Attack of the Clones."

Salvatore initially planned to "kill" one of the main characters in "Vector Prime," possibly even Luke Skywalker. However, George Lucas forbade such a drastic plot twist and instructed Salvatore to "kill" Chewbacca instead. Many fans wrongly assumed Salvatore made the decision himself, leading to threats against him.

Other Works

Salvatore's work is not limited to the Forgotten Realms and "Star Wars." His "Demonwars" series, set in his own fantasy world, comprises approximately ten books and a graphic novel. Other notable works include the fantasy trilogy "The Crimson Shadow" and the satirical fantasy series "Spearwielder's Tales." He also contributed dialogue for computer-controlled bots in the game "Quake III Arena."
