Biography of Roberto Micheletti

Roberto Micheletti was born on August 13, 1943, in the city of El Progreso, Honduras. He comes from a family of Italian immigrants. In his youth, Micheletti served in the Honorary Presidential Guard of Honduras. However, in 1963, the guard failed to protect President Ramon Villeda Morales from being overthrown by a military junta.

After leaving the army, Micheletti graduated from the Autonomous University of Monterrey with a degree in management. He also attended the National Autonomous University of Honduras, where he studied law.

Micheletti began his political career in 1979 when he entered the Honduran Parliament, the National Congress, as a temporary deputy. In 1980, he was elected as a full member of the congress. He served as a member of the parliamentary commission for the creation of the constitution in 1982. From 1988 to 1992, Micheletti held the position of secretary of the Central Executive Committee of the Liberal Party. In 1994, he became the secretary of the National Congress.

In 1998, Micheletti served as the state manager of the telecommunications corporation Hondutel. He held this position until 2000. In 2006, he was appointed as the President of the National Congress. However, his relationship with President Manuel Zelaya deteriorated, and Micheletti joined the opposition. In 2008, he lost the primary election in the Liberal Party to the incumbent vice president, Elvin Ernesto Santos.

In 2009, Zelaya attempted to hold a referendum to allow him to be reelected for a second term. However, he was overthrown by the military on June 28 and exiled to Costa Rica. On the same day, the National Congress appointed Micheletti as the interim President of Honduras. He promised to ensure transparent governance until the presidential elections scheduled for November 2009.

The international community viewed Zelaya's removal from power as a military coup, and the United States refused to recognize Micheletti as the country's president. In Honduras, protests by Zelaya's supporters erupted, leading Micheletti to impose a curfew. He argued that Zelaya was removed from office because he had "lost respect for the law." According to Micheletti, Zelaya's removal saved Honduras from "Chavism," the Venezuelan version of socialism promoted by Hugo Chavez.

Micheletti is married and has four children.
