Robin Guthrie: A Biography

Early Life and Formation of Cocteau Twins

Robin Guthrie was born on January 4, 1962, in Grangemouth, Scotland. He grew up in Central Scotland and at the age of 17, he formed a band with his fellow Scot, bassist Will Heggie. They met vocalist Elizabeth Fraser at a local disco, and she joined the band. Later, in 1983, Simon Raymonde replaced Will Heggie in the group.

Success with Cocteau Twins

In 1982, Cocteau Twins released their debut album "Garlands" on the independent label 4AD Records. The album's songs gained popularity and made it onto the charts of independent rock music. Initially influenced by artists such as Kate Bush, Sex Pistols, The Birthday Party, and Joy Division, Cocteau Twins soon developed their unique style that allowed them to thrive for two decades.

Breakup and Solo Career

During the production of their ninth album in 1997, the band fell apart due to irreconcilable differences between Robin and Elizabeth Fraser. Elizabeth, who had a daughter named Lucy-Belle with Robin in 1989, had left him in 1992 due to his substance abuse issues. Robin underwent rehabilitation, which helped maintain their working relationship for a few more years. However, the band eventually disbanded, and Elizabeth entered into a relationship with American musician Jeff Buckley, who tragically died in 1997.

After the breakup of Cocteau Twins in 1998, Guthrie began working on his solo album "Imperial," which was released in 2003 by Bella Union Records. He then collaborated with Harold Budd to create the soundtrack for the film "Mysterious Skin" in 2005. In 2006, he signed a contract with Darla Records for four solo albums, resulting in the release of "Continental," two EPs, "Everlasting" and "Waiting for Dawn," and the track "Argenta." In 2007, two more albums were released in collaboration with Harold Budd, titled "Before The Day Breaks" and "After The Night Falls."

Other Projects

Guthrie also worked with vocalist Siobhan de Maré in the band Violet Indiana, which released their first LP, "Roulette," in 2001. Their second album, "Russian Doll," was released in 2004. In September 2009, Robin Guthrie released his solo LP "Carousel."

Current Life

Currently, Robin Guthrie resides and works in France with his wife Florence, their daughter Violette, and Lucy-Belle.
