Biography of Robin Szolkowy

Robin Szolkowy is a German figure skater best known for his performances in pair skating with Aliona Savchenko. He was born on July 14, 1979, in Greifswald, Germany. His father was originally from Tanzania, and his mother is Czech. In 1983, he moved with his mother to Erfurt, where he began his figure skating training. What started as a hobby soon turned into a serious interest, and he began intensive training. Initially, Robin was involved in singles skating, but he eventually transitioned to pair skating. His first partner was Johanna Otto. Together with Claudia Rauschenbach, they won gold at the German Championships in 2001. However, Claudia decided to retire from the sport, leaving Robin without a partner.

In 2003, Robin started skating with Aliona Savchenko, whom he had met in 2000 at the Junior World Championships, where Aliona and her former partner won first place. They currently train in Chemnitz, where Robin resides. Their coach, Ingo Steuer, put in a lot of effort to ensure they won gold at the German Championships in their first season together. They made their international debut in the 2004-2005 season, finishing 4th at the European Championships and 6th at the World Championships. During this period, Robin Szolkowy and Aliona Savchenko won the German Championships for the second time. In 2006, they placed 6th at the Olympic Games in Turin. Just a year later, they became European Champions. In 2008, Robin and Aliona once again won the European Championships and claimed the top spot at the World Championships. In the 2008-2009 season, they won gold at two stages of the Grand Prix and bronze in the Grand Prix Final, with two pairs from China taking the gold and silver. They also became six-time German champions that season and three-time European champions in January 2009. In March of the same year, in Los Angeles, Robin and Aliona defended their title as world champions for the second time.

Throughout the 2010-2011 season, the German pair won six gold medals: the German Championship, European Championship, World Championship, and two stages and the final of the Grand Prix. In the following season, they became four-time world champions and won gold in the Grand Prix Final. They had to withdraw from the European Championships due to a serious leg injury that Aliona sustained while attempting a difficult triple Axel jump. In January 2013, Robin Szolkowy and Aliona Savchenko won silver at the European Championships, with their Russian rivals, Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov, taking first place. At the World Championships in London, Canada, they also placed second, conceding the title to the Russians. They secured second place at the Grand Prix stage in China, which Robin himself described as not their best performance. However, they learned from their mistakes and emerged victorious at the third Grand Prix stage in Beijing.
