Foundation of Rock Syndrome: The Seeds of Hard Rock
In the summer of 1986, a group of aspiring musicians from Gorky emerged with a shared passion for heavy metal. Led by vocalist and guitarist Sergei Gorbunov, the quintet of friends ventured into the realms of hard rock, forming the group Rock Syndrome.
The Birth of "Morbid Sensation"
Within months of their inception, Rock Syndrome made their electrifying debut at the 1st Gorky Rock Festival in October 1986. Their raw energy and intense performance set the crowd ablaze, creating a stir that would shape their future. Rock Syndrome quickly became one of the most talked-about acts in the festival, earning a spot in the prestigious Gorky Rock Club.
Forbidden Sounds: A Darkness Descends
The band's follow-up performance, dubbed "Morbid Sensation," reinforced their reputation as a formidable force. Their theatrical shows, complete with elaborate lighting, props, and makeup, captivated audiences and drew large crowds. However, their popularity also became a source of tension with authorities in the then-closed city of Gorky.
A Troubling Silence: A Setback and a Renaissance
Intensified scrutiny led to the ban of Rock Syndrome in 1987. Gorbunov, a central figure in the group, was barred from performing on the Gorky rock scene for four years. During this exile, the other band members embarked on various musical endeavors, but none could replicate the success of Rock Syndrome. Only drummer Evgeny Karpov remained steadfast in his pursuit of music.
Rebirth and Renewal: A Phoenix Rises
In 1991, Gorbunov emerged from the shadows. He joined forces with Moscow-based singer Raisa Sayed-Shah and former Vremena Goda frontman Alexander Kovalevsky. By 1994, Gorbunov had recorded a series of virtuoso guitar pieces that garnered acclaim in both Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod.
A Brief Alliance with Corrosion of Metal: A Path Diverged
In 1997, Gorbunov ventured into a brief collaboration with the heavy metal band Corrosion of Metal. However, the partnership proved short-lived, resulting in a single performance at the D.K. 40-летия Oktyabrya in Moscow.
Woodstocker Festivals: A Celebration of Rock Culture
In 1998, Gorbunov resurrected Rock Syndrome and embarked on a new chapter in their musical journey. He organized and hosted the Inter-Regional Woodstocker Festivals, bringing together countless rock bands, bikers, and a vast audience for a celebration of rock culture.
New Album and Expanded Horizons: A Collaboration Takes Shape
In 2002, Rock Syndrome partnered with musicians from Cherny Obelisk to record a new album. The result was the mini-album "Born Free," featuring Gorbunov on vocals, guitar, bass, and drums, alongside session musicians Vladimir Ermakov on drums, Daniil Zakharenkov on bass, and Dmitry Borisenkov on lead guitar and backing vocals.
A New Era: "Warriors Have Always Loved Loud Songs"
In 2005, Gorbunov unveiled a fresh program entitled "Warriors Have Always Loved Loud Songs." Rock Syndrome embarked on a new round of concerts, expanding their lineup to include bassist Andrei "Poruchik" Shmarinov.
Continued Success: Festivals, Anniversary, and Recognition
Rock Syndrome's performances spanned club venues and major rock festivals across the country. They became a regular presence at biker club events, including the 2005 Bike-Fest Motoyaroslavets. In 2006, the band celebrated their 20th anniversary with a special concert and presentation of Gorbunov's rock school and signature guitar strings.
Encyclopedia and Guitar School: Expanding the Rock Legacy
Beyond their musical endeavors, Rock Syndrome played an active role in the promotion of rock music. In 2007, they collaborated with the publishing house Emusin to develop a comprehensive encyclopedia of Russian rock music. Gorbunov also authored a rock school for electric guitar, further cementing his legacy as a teacher and mentor.
