Early Life and Education

Robert Bleier, a former American football player, was born in Appleton, Wisconsin. His passion for football emerged during his high school years, where he excelled on the field. After graduating in 1964, he pursued higher education at the University of Notre Dame, graduating in 1968 with a degree in business administration. During his time at Notre Dame, Bleier played an active role on the varsity football team and participated in the National Championship. It was at college that he met Terry Hanratty, who became his future teammate with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Service and Injury

In 1968, Bleier enlisted in the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, his football career was put on hold as he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. On August 20, 1969, during a routine patrol, Bleier's unit was ambushed. He sustained a bullet wound to his thigh and shrapnel to his ankle. For his bravery, he was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.

Recovery and Return to Football

Despite the severe injuries he sustained, Bleier's determination to play football burned brighter than ever. In the hospital in Tokyo, he received a poignant postcard from his teammate, urging him to return. Inspired by the support of his comrades, Bleier embarked on a grueling two-year journey to regain his fitness. In the summer of 1974, weighing 213 pounds, he returned to the Steelers' practice camp, determined to reclaim his place on the team.

NFL Career

Bleier's versatility as a player was unmatched, excelling both in offense and blocking. In 1976, he surpassed 1,000 career rushing yards, joining teammate Franco Harris as the second NFL team to have two players surpass the mark that season. Bleier played an instrumental role in the Steelers' first four Super Bowl victories, notably making a game-winning pass interception in Super Bowl XII.

Retirement and Legacy

After 12 seasons in the NFL, Bleier retired in 1980. During his career, he recorded 25 touchdowns, 3,865 rushing yards, and 1294 receiving yards. He ranked fourth all-time in rushing yards for the Steelers. His book, "Fighting Back: The Rocky Bleier Story," chronicled his challenging journey back from his war injuries. A television film was later made based on the book. In later years, Bleier became an author and motivational speaker, focusing primarily on financial management and retirement planning.
