Rod Laver is a former professional Australian tennis player who achieved tremendous success in the sport during the mid-20th century. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, having won numerous titles and set multiple records throughout his career.
Early Life and Career Beginnings
Rodney George Laver was born on August 9, 1938, in Rockhampton, Queensland, Australia. He was the third child of Roy Laver, a cattleman and butcher, and his wife Melba Roffey. Both of his parents had an interest in tennis, with his mother even participating in competitions. This upbringing contributed to Laver's passion for the sport, leading him to leave school and dedicate himself entirely to tennis.
Despite not being the tallest or fastest player (standing at 5'8" and weighing 150 pounds), Laver compensated for any shortcomings with his incredible work ethic, unwavering determination, and remarkable tactical abilities. His playing style was often described as technically flawless, and he consistently found ways to outmaneuver his opponents.
Tennis Achievements
Laver's career is marked by numerous achievements that solidify his status as one of the sport's greatest players. He holds the record for the most titles won in a single season, with 22 victories in men's singles at major tournaments in 1962. Additionally, Laver won at least ten tournaments per season for seven consecutive years, from 1964 to 1970.
Laver is the only tennis player to have achieved the Grand Slam twice, winning all four major tournaments in a single season in 1962 and 1969. He also holds the distinction of being the only male player to have accomplished this feat since the beginning of the Open Era. In 1967, Laver became the holder of the professional Grand Slam, triumphing at the US Pro Championships, Wembley Pro Championships, and French Pro Championships.
Throughout his career, Laver claimed a total of 19 major titles, including 11 in Grand Slam tournaments and 8 in professional Grand Slam tournaments. He is one of only three players, alongside Roy Emerson and Margaret Court, to have won each of the major tournaments in singles twice.
Aside from his success in singles, Laver also earned nine titles in doubles, including six in men's doubles at Grand Slam tournaments and three in mixed doubles. He demonstrated his versatility by winning on various court surfaces, including grass, clay, hardcourt, and even wooden courts.
Later Years and Personal Life
In 1966, at the age of 27, Laver married Mary Benson, an American divorcee with three children who was ten years older than him. The couple had one child together, a son named Rick. They primarily resided in California, but tragically, Mary passed away in 2012. Laver continues to live in their shared home in Carlsbad, California.
Despite the passage of several decades since his retirement, Rod Laver remains an iconic figure in the world of tennis. His achievements and contributions to the sport have solidified his status as one of the greatest players of all time.
