Biography of Rod Lurie
Rod Lurie, an American director, screenwriter, and film critic, was born in 1962 in Israel. However, his life was spent in the United States, where his family moved when he was a young child. He had a childhood split between Connecticut and Hawaii and ended up attending the United States Military Academy at West Point.
Transition from the Military to Film
After serving in the military for four years, Lurie left his military career behind to pursue work first as a reporter for small newspapers and then as a film critic. In the mid-1990s, Lurie decided to immerse himself in the world of filmmaking, which he had previously only critiqued. His first experience came in 1998 with the short film "4 Second Dela," which won the Special Jury Prize at the Deauville Film Festival and became Lurie's calling card as a director.
Early Career
Following his short film success, Lurie released his first feature film in 1999, "Deterrence," which he also wrote. Despite its risky political subject matter, the thriller received more praise than expected. In 2000, Lurie directed the politically charged drama "The Contender," which starred a star-studded cast including Gary Oldman and Joan Allen. The film garnered several awards and nominations, making it one of the most discussed films of the year.
Later Work
Lurie continued his directorial career with films such as "The Last Castle" in 2001, which he directed but did not write, and the short film "The Nazi" in 2002. He also ventured into television, creating and directing the series "Line of Fire" in 2003. In 2005-2006, Lurie worked on the television film "Commander in Chief," which focused on a presidential administration and family.
In 2007, Lurie released the sports drama "Resurrecting the Champ" and worked on the television film "I'm Paige Wilson." One of his most well-known projects, the drama "Nothing But the Truth," was released in 2008 and explored issues of journalistic ethics and freedom of speech.
Current and Future Projects
Lurie's upcoming thriller "Straw Dogs" is expected to be released in 2011. In addition to his work behind the camera, Lurie occasionally acts in his own films, including "Nothing But the Truth" and "Deterrence." He is also a producer for most of his projects and others.
Lurie is married to Gretchen and resides in Pasadena, California, with their two children.
