Personal Transformation
Once overweight, Jerkins radically transformed his lifestyle, losing a significant amount of weight.
Marriage and Family
On April 4, 2004, Jerkins married pop, gospel, and R&B singer Joy Enriquez. They have two children: son Rodney David, Jr. (born May 28, 2008) and daughter Heavenly Joy Jerkins (born November 17, 2009).
Record Labels and Collaborations
Darkchild RecordsJerkins twice attempted to establish his own record label. In 1999, he partnered with Sony/Epic Records to launch Darkchild Records, which featured artists such as Rhona, So Plush, and Fats. Other musicians who associated with the label included K-Young, Lil' Zal, and J. Mathis. While they enjoyed some commercial success, the label disbanded.
In 2005, Darkchild Records was revived, with new artists including Shamari Fears of Blaque, MC Asia Lee, gospel singer Anesha Birchett, and dancer Atiba. Jerkins also collaborated briefly with Joy Enriquez, who later released her gospel album under JoyFul Child Records.
Darkchild Records' roster fluctuated over time, with Shamari, Asia Lee, and Atiba departing. As of 2009, Texas artists Britt and Lala Main joined the label.
JoyFul Child Records
Rodney Jerkins established JoyFul Child Records, a gospel music label, for his wife's sophomore album. While the label was separate from Darkchild Records, Joy's album was marketed through her official website and she remained listed on Darkchild Records' website.
Music Mogul
In late 2008, Jerkins co-founded the music technology company Music Mogul with Nicholas Longano, Ray Brown, and Jonathan E. Eubanks. MusicMogul.com became a groundbreaking online music platform that awarded prizes, facilitated contract signings, and connected label stars with their fans.
