Roger Forsythe: Visionary Designer and Fashion Icon

Early Life and Education

Roger Forsythe was born on July 11, 1955, in Chillicothe, Missouri, and raised in Texas. He pursued a degree in business at the University of Houston before attending the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in menswear design in 1952.

Building a Brand

Together with his brother Bill, Forsythe launched their menswear company in Des Moines, Iowa. The brand, named 'Forsythe,' was officially registered on July 23, 1984. Forsythe gained valuable experience working for renowned designers such as Jean-Paul Germaine, Kenneth Gordon, and D. D. Dominick.

Success at Perry Ellis Group

In 1988, Forsythe joined the Perry Ellis Group as its vice president and design director. Despite the immense pressure and responsibility, he embraced his role, helping to elevate the company's sales from $15 million to $100 million annually.

Accolades and Legacy

Forsythe's exceptional talent was recognized with the Council of Fashion Designers of America's (CFDA) Menswear Award in 1991. Tragically, his life was cut short on October 6, 1991, at the New York University Medical Center. He died from lymphoma, a complication of HIV.

Despite his passing, Forsythe's legacy lives on through his innovative designs and the influence he had on the menswear industry. His work continues to inspire generations of designers and fashion enthusiasts alike.
