Roger Karoutchi: French Politician and Statesman
Early Life and EducationRoger Karoutchi was born in Casablanca, Morocco, into an Armenian-Jewish family. His father was a dentist, and his mother was a homemaker. He studied at the Institute of Political Studies in Aix-en-Provence, where he earned a Master's degree in law. Karoutchi also holds a professorship in history and served as Director General of National Education.
Political Career
Karoutchi's political career began at the age of 16, when he joined the Union for a Popular Movement (UMP). In 1981, he became the UMP's Delegate for Youth Affairs, followed by Special Advisor to the Secretary-General of the UMP in 1985. He held various positions within the UMP, including Delegate to the National Training School (1989), Member of the National Council of the UMP, and National Secretary for General Management and Animation of the UMP (1998-1999).
Parliament and Government
In 1999, Karoutchi was elected Regional Councillor of Île-de-France and Chairman of the UMP in the region. He served in this role until 2002, when he became Chairman of the UMP in the Senate. On December 17, 1999, he was elected Senator for the Hauts-de-Seine department, a position he held until June 24, 2007.
On May 18, 2007, Karoutchi was appointed Secretary of State for Relations with Parliament, serving until June 23, 2009.
Historic Announcement
On January 23, 2009, Karoutchi became the first French minister to publicly disclose his homosexuality. This announcement made history in France, as no sitting minister had previously acknowledged their sexual orientation in this way.
