Irish-Born British Singer Roisin Murphy
Roisin Marie Murphy (also known as Róisín and Roíshín) is an Irish-born British singer, songwriter, and former lead vocalist of the duo Moloko.
Early Life and Moloko
Murphy was born on July 5, 1973, in Arklow, County Wicklow. She joined Moloko after meeting Mark Brydon at a party, where she boldly asked, "Do you like my tight sweater?" This line inspired the title of their 1997 debut album. Their unique sound, featuring Murphy's distinctive vocals and Brydon's unconventional arrangements, made them internationally famous. Murphy sang on two more Moloko albums, "I Am Not a Doctor" and "Things To Make And Do," as well as on tracks with artists like Handsome Boy Modeling School and Boris Dlugosch.
Solo Career: Ruby Blue
Moloko disbanded in 2003, and Murphy embarked on a solo career. Her debut album, "Ruby Blue," was produced by Matthew Herbert and released in 2005. The album showcased Murphy's versatility as she experimented with jazz, rock, and pop while maintaining the electronic undertones of Moloko's sound.
Overpowered and Injury
In 2006, Murphy signed with EMI Records for her second album, "Overpowered." Released in 2007, the album featured a more traditional electronic pop sound. However, during a concert in Moscow, Murphy suffered a serious accident when she struck her head on a stage prop, resulting in a broken brow bone and a cut eyebrow.
Touring and Future Prospects
Despite the injury, Murphy continued touring in Europe. Her musicality and independence as a solo artist have been widely praised. While she has not reunited with Brydon musically, she has expressed openness to the possibility in the future.
