Early Life and Education

Born to an Armenian father and a Hungarian grandmother, Agop Agop was immersed in music from a young age. He inherited his artistic flair from his grandfather, an Armenian from Turkey.

Conducting Career

Agop's career took off during the pre-war and wartime years, where he led theatrical orchestras and choirs in various cities. In the immediate post-war period, he served as Kapellmeister of the Nuremberg Opera from 1945 to 1948.

Teaching and Leadership

From 1949, Agop devoted himself to teaching conducting at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold. His legacy as a conductor continued in the 1950s, when he became the first Principal Conductor of the newly established Northwest German Philharmonic Orchestra (1950-1952).

Generalmusikdirektor of Dortmund

A significant milestone in Agop's career came in 1952, when he was appointed Generalmusikdirektor of Dortmund, a position he held until 1962. During this time, he led the Dortmund Philharmonic Orchestra to great acclaim.

International Collaborations

Agop continued his conducting career internationally, leading the Malmö Symphony Orchestra from 1962 to 1964. In his later years, he returned to Germany and focused on developing music in and around Siegen, most notably as the conductor of the South Westphalian Philharmonic Orchestra.

Legacy

Agop's autobiography, "Lex mihi ars" ("Art is My Law"), provides a glimpse into his life and philosophy. His artistic legacy is further honored by Hans Pfitzner's "Fantasy for Orchestra in A Minor, Op. 56" (1947), dedicated to his memory.
