Roman Hromykh: A Literary Scholar and Public Figure
Roman Hromykh was a Soviet and Ukrainian literary scholar, literary critic, and public figure. He held the academic titles of Candidate of Philosophical Sciences (1969), Doctor of Philological Sciences (1982), Professor (1983), and Academician of the Academy of Sciences of Higher Education. He was also a member of the Writers' Union of Ukraine (1983).
Early Life and Education
Roman Hromykh was born into a family that had faced adversity. After his father's arrest in 1947 for alleged connections to the OUN-UPA underground, he was raised by his grandfather, who had recently returned from deportation to Siberia. Hromykh attended local schools and later pursued higher education at the pedagogical училище in Brody, graduating with honors. In 1955, he enrolled in the history and philology department of the Lviv Pedagogical Institute, which he completed in 1960 at the Drobobych Pedagogical Institute named after Ivan Franko.
Academic and Literary Career
Hromykh began his teaching career in western Ukraine and served in the army before completing his postgraduate studies at the Lviv University named after Ivan Franko from 1964-1967. During his career, he held positions at the Donetsk University (1967-1971) and the Ternopil Financial and Economic Institute (1971-1975). In 1982, he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation at the Institute of Literature of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR.
Public and Political Activity
Hromykh was involved in public and political life, serving as the first chairman of the Ternopil Regional Council of the All-Ukrainian Society of the Ukrainian Language named after Taras Shevchenko "Prosvita." He was also the head of the regional organization of the Democratic Party of Ukraine and was elected as a deputy of the USSR Supreme Soviet (1989-1991). From 1992-1994, he held the position of Representative of the President of Ukraine in the Ternopil region.
Later Years and Legacy
After leaving public office, Hromykh became a professor at the Ukrainian Free University in Munich from 1992 and worked at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow from 1997-1999. He passed away in 1995 and is buried in Ternopil.
