Roman Kreuziger: A Czech Cycling Legend

Roman Kreuziger is a Czech professional road racing cyclist who has been competing for the "Mitchelton-Scott" team since 2017. He is the 2016 Czech National Road Race Champion and won the youth classification at the 2011 Giro d'Italia.

Early Life and Career

Kreuziger's father, also named Roman, was a successful cyclist, winning the World Junior Cyclocross Championship and the Tour of Austria. Growing up, Roman Jr. participated in various sports before settling on cycling. He trained at the Plzen cycling school and later in Switzerland and Italy. Like his father, he initially balanced cyclocross and road racing.

In 2004, Kreuziger won both the road races at the Czech Junior National Championships. He also became the World Junior Road Race Champion, finishing second in the Time Trial and Cyclocross.

Professional Career

In 2006, Kreuziger signed a professional contract with the Italian team "Liquigas." The following year, he began to place high in prestigious races and participate in Grand Tours. In 2008, he won the Tour de Suisse and finished second in the Tour de Romandie.

The next year, Kreuziger triumphed in the Tour de Romandie and made his debut in the top ten of a Grand Tour, the Tour de France. In 2010, he again placed ninth in the Tour. However, his performances in the Vuelta a España were less successful. Kreuziger did not participate in the Giro d'Italia, as his Italian team prioritized local riders.

Captaincy and Youth Classification Victory

In 2011, Kreuziger joined the Kazakh team "Astana" after Alberto Contador departed. He became the team captain for the Giro d'Italia 2011, finishing sixth overall and winning the youth classification.
