A Young Hero's Passion for Saving Lives
A Heartfelt MissionAt the tender age of six, Roman McConney has made an extraordinary impact, saving the lives of over 1,000 dogs from euthanasia at animal shelters. Inspired by their own dog Luna, Roman and his mother, Jennifer, embarked on a mission of compassion in 2016 in Texas.
The Power of a Child's Voice
Roman's love for animals shines through in his videos, where he enthusiastically advocates for homeless dogs and cats. In his first video as a first-grader, he describes a stray dog's breed, age, and endearing qualities. "I think my son was born with a love for animals," Jennifer said. "At such a young age, he realized how many dogs don't have homes and he always wanted to help."
A Journey for Change
When Roman's father, a Navy serviceman, received orders to relocate, Roman and Jennifer moved from Texas to Skagit Valley, Washington, with 31 dogs in tow. "I joked with the Texas rescuers that they should create an underground railroad to Washington because there are so many more opportunities for the dogs here than in Texas," Jennifer told CBS News.
Project Freedom Ride
In December 2016, Jennifer founded Project Freedom Ride, an organization that transports dogs from the high-risk areas of Texas to loving homes in the Pacific Northwest. Roman and his mother raise funds for the transportation costs, collaborating with shelters in Texas that house stray, abandoned, and euthanasia-bound dogs. Six-year-old Roman plays a critical role, making phone calls and creating heartwarming videos that resonate with families willing to provide a safe haven for these animals. One of his videos, featuring a deaf dog named Legend, went viral, leading to her adoption and relocation to Colorado.
The Road to Success
Project Freedom Ride has facilitated the adoption of over 1050 dogs in a relatively short period. Once potential adopters on the Pacific Northwest are identified, the organization arranges with a transport company to deliver these precious souls to their new homes. Transporting a pet across the country is expensive, costing around $11,000. Jennifer and Roman rely on the generosity of donors to cover these expenses.
An Inspiration to All
Roman has garnered a loyal following online, but his most devoted fan is his father, who is currently serving in Japan. The young hero's unwavering passion for animal welfare serves as an inspiration to all, proving that even a child can make a profound difference in the world.
