Early Life and Family
Roman Virastyuk was born on April 20, 1968, in the city of Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine. His parents, both athletes, instilled in him a love for sports. His mother played volleyball for a local factory team, while his father played soccer for a rural team. Roman's younger brother, Vasyl, became a renowned strongman and was crowned the World's Strongest Man.
Education and Athletics
Roman attended Ivano-Frankivsk School No. 4, the College of Physical Education, and Ternopil State University. From 1980 to 2005, he trained in athletics (discus throw, shot put) under the guidance of Ivan Grigoryevich Sharogo, a distinguished Ukrainian coach. Roman was a member of the USSR's youth, junior, and youth teams. In 1991, he won a silver medal at the last USSR Championship and the USSR Cup.
National Championships and Achievements
Roman dominated Ukrainian athletics, winning 17 national championships and 8 Ukrainian Cups. Internationally, he earned a bronze medal at the 1994 European Championships, four silver medals at the European Cup (1994, 1995, 1999, 2000), and a gold medal at the European Club Championships in 2002. He represented Ukraine at three Olympic Games (Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004) and set a personal best of 21.34 m in the shot put.
Later Career and Health Challenges
From 2005 to 2015, Roman served as the head of the Department of Youth and Sports Affairs in the Ivano-Frankivsk Regional State Administration. He also pursued a career in television, hosting sports programs such as "Olympic Day" and "Olympic Passions." In 2005, he underwent a heart surgery and was declared a Group II invalid. In 2015, he underwent two additional heart surgeries, leading to a public fundraising campaign. However, on July 27, 2019, Roman Virastyuk passed away at the age of 51 due to an aortic aneurysm and dissection.
Legacy
Roman Virastyuk is remembered as a legendary Ukrainian athlete and a role model for aspiring sportsmen. His indomitable spirit and dedication to his sport continue to inspire future generations. He is survived by his wife and two sons, Roman and Ivan.
