Ron King: A Checkered Champion

Early Life and Career

Born in the parish of St. George, Barbados, Ron King discovered the game of checkers in local clubs and shops. Despite being self-taught, King quickly mastered the art, only becoming aware of specialized literature at the age of 20.

International Breakthrough

King's first trip to the United States for a checkers tournament in 1986 proved to be a turning point. His aggressive play impressed American players, and he narrowly missed becoming the U.S. champion. From that point forward, King dominated both the U.S. and World Checkers Championships in both GAYP (Go As You Please) and 3-Move formats.

Record-Breaking History

In 2003, King became an 11-time World Champion by winning both disciplines, setting a new record. He has reigned as World Champion 13 times in total.

Global Ambassador

To promote the game, King embarked on frequent international tours, playing matches in Barbados, the United States, England, and Ireland. He also conducted exhibition tours in South Africa and the Caribbean.

Guinness World Record

In 1998, King played 385 opponents simultaneously in Houston, Texas, winning all games. This feat was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Personal Life

King is married to Hazeldeen, and they have three children: two daughters and a son.
