Ron McGerity was an American cyclist and bicycle traveler who tragically lost his life on a road in the Ivanovo region of Russia. The driver who hit him attempted to flee the scene, but was quickly apprehended. As expected, the driver was found to be intoxicated, and unfortunately, Ron could not be saved.
A Unique Traveler
Ron McGerity, who resided in Boston, Massachusetts, was 61 years old and had visited numerous countries over the past 15 years. He embarked on his travels in a very unique way - on a custom-designed bicycle that he tailored to his own needs. Riding on a bike with a low frame, no handlebars, and different winds from various countries, Ron attracted attention wherever he went. He traveled alone, exploring multiple countries on different continents, with his primary mission being to spread peace. Ron would present local administrations with "letters of peace" in various cities, earning him the nickname "Messenger of Peace." Additionally, he raised funds for several charitable projects.
A Tragic Accident
Unfortunately, even the kindest deeds sometimes cannot protect against tragic circumstances. Ron's misfortune occurred in Russia, specifically on the Golden Ring route while traveling through the Ivanovo region, near the village of Golchanovo. On that fateful day, a drunk driver of a Gazelle van struck Ron from the side of the road, where he was peacefully cycling, leaving the Messenger of Peace with no chance of survival. The driver fled the scene but was later apprehended due to eyewitness accounts. The examination revealed alcohol in the driver's blood, and he will face the deserved consequences. Sadly, this could not save Ron, as his injuries were incompatible with life, and he passed away.
A Global Issue
Regrettably, this is not the first time that bicycle travelers have lost their lives on the roads of the world. In 2013, British cyclists Peter Root and Mary Thompson tragically died in Thailand while on a round-the-world cycling journey. In general, the mistreatment of cyclists by car drivers is a significant issue worldwide, as they are often not recognized as full participants in traffic. A criminal case has been launched in the Ivanovo region regarding Ron's incident. However, this will not bring him back, as the Messenger of Peace will no longer ride his unique bicycle on the roads of the world. His passing is mourned by countless individuals around the globe, and many see this tragedy as more than just a road accident - it symbolizes the crushing of peace on the roads of the Ivanovo region.
