Ronald MacKay: A Veteran of the Battle of Britain
The Final SurvivorGroup Captain Ronald MacKay, one of the last surviving veterans of the Battle of Britain, passed away at the age of 101. His bravery and heroism helped protect Britain from Nazi tyranny.
The Battle of Britain
From July 10 to October 30, 1940, the Battle of Britain raged in the skies above the British Isles. German bombers attempted to gain air superiority, but were met with fierce resistance from British fighter pilots known as "The Few." MacKay was one of the last nine remaining defenders of British airspace.
A Member of the Few
Winston Churchill famously said, "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few." MacKay was one of those few who risked their lives to defend their country.
Early Life and Career
Born in 1917, MacKay joined the Royal Air Force (RAF) before the outbreak of World War II. He became a civilian flying instructor in September 1939. After completing his training, he joined 234 Squadron in September 1940.
A Gallant Mission
On September 25, 1940, while returning from a mission over St. Eval, MacKay's Spitfire malfunctioned, forcing him to bail out. He crash-landed near St. Mawgan, sustaining serious injuries.
Later Life
After being discharged from the RAF in January 1946, MacKay ran a family tourism business in Scotland for many years. He passed away in Edinburgh on August 4, 2018, surrounded by loved ones.

The Battle of Britain was a pivotal moment in British history. The veterans of the Few helped save their country from Nazi oppression. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.
