Early Life and Military Career
Georgy Nikolaevich Konev was born on May 25, 1912, in the village of Kardailovka, Russia. He completed secondary school and worked as the secretary of the Kardailovsky village council and as a messenger for the district OGPU.
In 1931, Konev was drafted into the Red Army. In 1936, he graduated from the Odessa Military Aviation School of Pilots.
International Service and Combat Experience
From 1937 to 1938, Konev provided international assistance to China against the Japanese invasion. He exhibited exceptional courage and flight skills, achieving several aerial victories.
World War II and Distinguished Service
On June 1941, Konev joined the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. He played a crucial role in the Battle of Moscow, as the commander of a fighter squadron and later as deputy commander for flight training.
On multiple occasions, Konev displayed remarkable composure and bravery. Notably, on February 20, 1942, he shot down five German planes in a single engagement. He was a member of the party bureau of the regiment and actively mentored young pilots.
As a Squadron Commander
Major Konev was appointed commander of a fighter aviation regiment. Participating in offensive operations on the Middle Don, he significantly increased his tally of victories. By the end of 1942, he had flown 312 combat missions, participated in 98 air battles, and shot down 14 (or 17, according to some sources) enemy aircraft personally and 18 (or 18) in a group setting.
Final Battle and Legacy
On December 30, 1942, Konev engaged in a fierce battle against a large group of enemy aircraft. He shot down two advanced enemy fighters before being killed in action.
For his courage and dedication, Konev was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on May 1, 1943. He was buried in the village of Kuzminskoye, where an obelisk stands in his honor.
In recognition of his sacrifice, a farmer from Konev's hometown purchased a La-5FN fighter and donated it to the legendary pilot Ivan Kozhedub. The aircraft, inscribed with Konev's name, claimed eight enemy planes under Kozhedub's command. After Kozhedub's transfer, it continued to be flown by other skilled pilots, who achieved numerous victories.
