Early Life and Influences

Growing up in the impoverished Stockwell neighborhood of South London, Roots Manuva's childhood was marked by strict Pentecostal upbringing and the hardships of his family's Jamaican heritage. These experiences left a profound impact on his music, particularly in songs like "Sinny Sin Sins" and "Colossal Insight."

Musical Beginnings

Manuva's first musical experience came in 1994 when he witnessed a sound system at Stockwell's skate park. The overwhelming bass captivated him, leaving a lasting impression. He debuted under the moniker "Roots Manuva" on the Bluntly Speaking Vinyl imprint of Suburban Base Records, and soon collaborated with Blak Twang on the single "Queen's Head."

Career Highlights

In 1996, Manuva's collaboration with Skitz, "Where My Mind Is At"/"Blessed Be The Manner," was released on the Ronin label. His debut album, "Brand New Second Hand," released in 1998, earned him critical acclaim and the Best Hip-Hop Act award at the MOBO Awards. Manuva's unique style and recognizable voice have led to collaborations with renowned artists such as Chali 2na, Ozomatli, DJ Shadow, Mr. Scruff, U.N.K.L.E., Nightmares On Wax, The Cinematic Orchestra, and Gorillaz.
