Rosalind Chao: A Pioneer in Asian American Representation
Early Life and Career BeginningsBorn on September 23, 1959, in Anaheim, California, Rosalind Chao made history as the first Chinese Californian. Her parents owned "Chao's," a Chinese-American pancake house across from Disneyland, where she grew up helping with the family business.
Chao's passion for acting emerged at a tender age of seven when she joined a touring Peking Opera company in California. She honed her skills through summer and Christmas vacations, appearing in commercials and developing her craft.
Breakthrough Roles
In 1983, Chao landed her breakout role as Soon-Lee Klinger in the final season of the beloved sitcom "MASH." This led to a recurring role in its spin-off "AfterMASH" and a lead in the acclaimed television film "The Terry Fox Story."
Star Trek and Beyond
Chao's career reached new heights with her portrayal of Keiko O'Brien, the botanist wife of the Enterprise's transporter chief Miles O'Brien, in "Star Trek: The Next Generation." She continued this role in the spin-off "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine."
Beyond television, Chao made notable film appearances, including "The Heart of a Dragon" (1980) and Nancy Kelly's directorial debut "Thousand Pieces of Gold" (1991), where she played a young woman escaping slavery during the Gold Rush era.
Collaboration with Wayne Wang
Chao's collaboration with director Wayne Wang began with the disappointing "Life is Cheap... But Toilet Paper is Expensive" (1989). However, she found a more fulfilling role in his ensemble drama "The Joy Luck Club" (1993).
Recent Appearances and Personal Life
Today, Chao is recognized for her roles in series like "Grey's Anatomy," "Private Practice," and "Tell Me You Love Me." She has also appeared in films such as "Freaky Friday" and "I Am Sam."
Rosalind Chao is married to voice actor Simon Templeman, and they have two children.
