Early Career and Academic Pursuits

Rose Gottemoeller embarked on her career in national security in 1993, serving on the National Security Council. She later became Deputy Director of the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London. Gottemoeller also taught Soviet politics at Georgetown University.

Time at the Carnegie Endowment

In 2000, Gottemoeller joined the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. From 2006 to 2009, she served as the Director of the Carnegie Moscow Center.

Role in Nuclear Arms Control

In November 1997, Gottemoeller became the Director of the Office of Nonproliferation and National Security at the U.S. Department of Energy. In this role, she played a crucial role in nuclear arms control negotiations.

U.S. State Department

On April 6, 2009, Gottemoeller was appointed Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security. She led the U.S. delegation in the negotiations for the New START Treaty, which was concluded in April 2010.

Gottemoeller is an active member of the Democratic Party. She has donated to the election campaigns of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.
