Biography of Ross McEwan

Ross Maxwell McEwan is a New Zealand banker and economist, currently serving as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS). He was born in New Zealand and attended a boys' school in Hastings. Afterwards, he enrolled in Massey University, where he earned degrees in Entrepreneurial Studies and Personnel Management.

McEwan faced challenges during his studies and struggled with accounting courses, as he found them less important compared to his passion for sports and other recreational activities. Despite this, he excelled in his professional career and demonstrated that his interpersonal skills were crucial for success in the banking industry.

In his early career, McEwan held managerial positions in various companies, including 'Axa' and 'National Mutual'. He also worked in the brokering industry and held a high-level position at 'First NZ Capital Securities'. Before joining RBS, he served as the Head of Retail Banking at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.

McEwan assumed the role of CEO at RBS in August 2013. Despite having only ten years of experience in the banking sector, he was entrusted with leading significant reforms to shift the bank's focus from investment banking to retail banking. Outside of his professional life, McEwan met his future wife, Stephanie, while studying at Massey University. They both shared a love for basketball. Stephanie, a food technology professional, and Ross now have two adult daughters and own a farm in New Zealand.
