Early Life and Career
Roy Cooper was born and raised in North Carolina. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned a law degree. After graduating, he began practicing law in private practice.
Entry into Politics
In 1986, Cooper entered politics by winning a seat in the North Carolina Senate. He served in the Senate for 12 years, during which time he became known for his work on environmental protection, education, and healthcare.
Attorney General of North Carolina
In 1998, Cooper was elected Attorney General of North Carolina. He served in this role for 16 years, becoming the longest-serving Attorney General in state history. As Attorney General, he pursued environmental lawsuits against polluters, fought for consumer protection, and advocated for access to healthcare.
Governor of North Carolina
In 2016, Cooper ran for Governor of North Carolina. He defeated incumbent Governor Pat McCrory in a close race, becoming the first Democrat to be elected Governor of North Carolina since 1992.
