Roy Edward Disney: A Biography

Roy Edward Disney was born on January 10, 1930, in Los Angeles, California. His parents were Roy Oliver Disney and Edna Francis Disney. By this time, the famous characters of the studio, Mickey Mouse and Pluto, had already been created, drawn, and gained popularity.

Career at Walt Disney Company

In 1951, Roy graduated from Pomona College in California and started working as an assistant director and producer at the Walt Disney Company. After 16 years, in 1967, he was elected to the board of directors. In 1977, he stepped down from the position of executive director, citing the challenging situation within the company, but remained a member of the board of directors.

Challenges and Achievements

Roy had to make difficult decisions regarding the dismissal of two well-known executives of the Disney Company - Ron Miller, Walt Disney's son-in-law, in 1984, and Michael Eisner, who had served the company for 20 years, in 2004. Roy believed that their actions as leaders threatened the company's integrity and resulted in the loss of the famous Disney spirit.

In 1984, Roy also faced attempts to divide and acquire the company by unscrupulous investors and asset sales. This corporate battle resulted in Miller's dismissal, and Michael Eisner and Frank Wells took over. Roy became the vice-chairman of the board of directors and led the animation department. His goal was to revive the traditions of animated films, and he achieved success with the release of "Fantasia 2000," a sequel to Walt Disney's famous "Fantasia" from 1940.

Corporate Battles and Legacy

In 2003, another corporate battle erupted, this time with Michael Eisner. Roy claimed that the company was suffering huge losses as it had to maintain several television channels, and the animation, the core component of Disney, was completely neglected. Once again, Roy emerged victorious, and Michael Eisner resigned. After his departure, Pixar Animation Studios merged with Disney, releasing masterpieces such as "Toy Story," "Monsters, Inc.," "Finding Nemo," "Cars," and others.

Personal Life and Legacy

Roy Disney had a passion for sailing. He set several speed records, including a solo trip from Los Angeles to Honolulu in a single-hulled boat, completing it in a record-breaking time of 7 days, 11 hours, 41 minutes, and 27 seconds. On April 26, 2008, Disney received an honorary doctorate from the California Maritime Academy for his significant contributions to the state and the nation, including his involvement in international sailing.

In January 2007, the 77-year-old Roy Disney filed for divorce from his wife, Patricia, citing irreconcilable differences. The couple had been married for 52 years and raised four children. After the divorce, Roy married Leslie DeMeuse, a producer of sailing documentaries, who was significantly younger than him.

On December 16, 2009, Roy Disney passed away at Hoag Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach, California, after battling stomach cancer for a year. He was just one month shy of his 80th birthday. His remains were cremated, and his ashes were scattered at sea from a yacht on January 9, 2010, near Newport Beach Harbor.
