Phyllis Calvert: An English Actress
Phyllis Calvert (born Phyllis Hannah Bickle) was an English actress of the theater, film, and television. She was born in 1915 in London, England. Although she initially trained at the Margaret Morris School of Dance, Phyllis was drawn to an acting career.
Early Career
Phyllis made her debut in the film industry in 1927 with the comedy "The Arcadians." However, her name did not appear in the credits. Despite this, Phyllis, who envisioned herself as an actress, was undeterred. She also pursued a career in theater, making her debut in the play "A Woman's Privilege." Over time, she performed in productions such as "Blithe Spirit," "The Heiress," and "Peter Pan."
Rise to Fame
Phyllis appeared on screen in the early 1940s, starring in the drama "They Came by Night," where she landed the leading role. She also starred in the wartime musical comedy "Let George Do It!" Around the same period, Calvert had notable roles in projects such as the comedy "Kipps" and the biographical drama "The Young Mr. Pitt." She played leading female characters in the 1943 drama "The Man in Grey" and the wartime comedy "2,000 Women" in 1944.
Later Career
In the late 1940s, Phyllis ventured to conquer Hollywood but soon returned to the United Kingdom. It was there that she received her only nomination for a BAFTA Award for her role in the 1952 film "Crash of Silence." In the 1960s, her stage career thrived, and she appeared in films such as the biographical drama "Oscar Wilde," the wartime musical "Oh! What a Lovely War," and the thriller "Twisted Nerve."
In the 1970s, Calvert also starred in television series such as "Kate," "Tales of the Unexpected," and several others. In the 1980s and 1990s, she gradually moved away from the theater stage and focused more on television work. During this period, she appeared in long-running TV projects such as "Bun," "Mr. Bean," "The House of Eliott," "The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes," "Midsomer Murders," and numerous television films.
Phyllis Calvert's final film role was in the 1997 melodrama "Mrs. Dalloway." It is known that she was married to actor Peter Murray-Hill, and they had two children. The marriage lasted from 1941 until Peter's death in 1957. The actress herself passed away on October 8, 2002, at the age of 87.
