Early Career and Wigan Athletic

Roy Carroll began his professional career in 1995 with English club Hull City. After two seasons, he moved to Wigan Athletic in 1997 for a club-record fee of £350,000. In the 1999/2000 season, Carroll helped Wigan set a record unbeaten run of 26 matches, earning him the award for Second Division Goalkeeper of the Year.

Manchester United

Carroll joined Manchester United in July 2001 for £2.5 million. He faced stiff competition from French goalkeeper Fabien Barthez, but he won the Premier League title in 2003/04. After Barthez left, Carroll became the club's number one choice ahead of American Tim Howard. He won the FA Cup in 2004.

Despite a memorable blunder against Tottenham Hotspur when he allowed a goal from behind his line, Carroll also made a series of crucial saves in the Champions League against AC Milan. However, he left Manchester United in 2005 after failing to secure guarantees about his status as first-choice goalkeeper.

West Ham United and Rangers

Carroll signed for West Ham United in July 2005. He made his debut in August and played in the 2006 FA Cup Final, which the team lost to Liverpool. However, his time at West Ham was marred by personal problems, including issues with alcohol and gambling, leading him to leave in 2007. He joined Scottish side Rangers for a brief spell but made only one appearance.

Return to the Premier League and Odense

In January 2008, Carroll returned to the Premier League with Derby County. He played in the League Cup final against Manchester United but could not prevent their relegation. After a short spell at Odense in Denmark, where he was recognized as the Danish Goalkeeper of the Year, he left the club in 2010.

Coaching and Later Career

Carroll had a brief stint as player-manager at Barnet in 2011, where he guided the team to victory in the Hertfordshire County Cup Final. He signed for Greek side OFI Crete in 2011 and later joined Olympiacos in January 2012. At Olympiacos, he won the Greek Super League title twice and the Greek Cup twice.

International Career

Carroll made his international debut for Northern Ireland in 1997 but was often the second-choice goalkeeper behind Mike Taylor. He became the team's first-choice after Taylor's retirement and played in the qualifying rounds for Euro 2016.
