Biography of Ruben James Kun

Ruben James Kun is a former Nauruan politician who served as the President of Nauru from December 19, 1996, to February 13, 1997. He is also known for his role as the Minister of Finance in Nauru.

Early Life and Education

Ruben James Kun obtained his education at the Australian National University, where he studied law. He graduated from the university and went on to pursue a career in politics.

Political Career

Kun entered politics in 1971 when he was elected to the Nauruan Parliament representing the Buada constituency. A few years later, during Bernard Dowiyogo's administration, Kun served as the Minister of Labour and Public Works. In the 1980s, he held positions as the Minister of Health and Education. He also served as the Speaker of Parliament in Nauru. Prior to becoming President, Kun served as the Minister of Finance under the cabinet of Lagumot Harris from 1995 to 1996.

Presidency and Later Career

After winning the presidential election, Kun assumed the role of President on December 19, 1996. He held this position until February 13, 1997, when he handed over the presidency to Kinza Godfrey Claudemaru.

Following his presidency, Kun became a representative for fugitives in the Supreme Court, particularly those who are subject to extradition under the agreement between Nauru and Australia.
