Biography of Ruby Dee

Ruby Dee was an American actress, poet, playwright, screenwriter, journalist, and activist. She was born on October 27, 1924, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Gladys and Edward. Although her parents had no connection to the arts, they never hindered their daughter's desire to become an actress. After a while, her father remarried to teacher Emma Amelia Benson, who became Ruby's surrogate mother. The actress grew up in Harlem, New York. In 1945, she graduated from Hunter College with a degree and excellent knowledge of French and Spanish. Around the same time, Ruby was a member of the Delta Sigma Theta society.
