Biography of Rudolf August Oetker

Rudolf August Oetker was a German entrepreneur and billionaire who managed the food company 'Oetker-Gruppe'. Before he started his active entrepreneurial career, Oetker served in the Waffen-SS for some time. He became the president of the family company in 1944, inheriting it from his grandfather, August Oetker, who had created one of the first versions of a baking powder. Oetker's biological father, Rudolf Oetker Sr., died in 1916 during the Battle of Verdun, and his mother Ida Oetker, stepfather Richard Kaselowsky, and half-sisters Ilse and Ingeborg died in a bombing during World War II.

Building the Family Business

Under Oetker's leadership, the family business reached a significantly new level of success, becoming a symbol of Germany's post-war revival. The company sold pizza, beer, and champagne, and its revenues grew rapidly.

Tragic Kidnapping Incident

In 1976, Oetker's 25-year-old son Richard was kidnapped, and the kidnappers demanded a ransom of 21 million marks. The money was paid, but Richard was found in an extremely critical condition. He had been kept in a wooden box and tortured with electric shocks. Unfortunately, Richard never fully recovered from the injuries and became disabled. The kidnappers were eventually caught.

Later Years and Philanthropy

In 1981, Rudolf Oetker stepped down as the CEO of 'Oetker-Gruppe' and handed over the reins to his son August Oetker. Oetker was known as a prominent patron and collector of various artworks. In late 1999, he even established a foundation in his own name, recognized for supporting culture, art, preserving monuments, and sponsoring scientific research. In October 1981, Oetker became an honorary citizen of his hometown, Bielefeld.

Legacy and Passing

Rudolf Oetker was married multiple times, and he had a total of eight children. His eldest daughter, Rosely Schweizer, is currently involved in politics. Oetker passed away on January 16, 2007, due to pneumonia in a hospital in Hamburg. He was buried on January 20, 2007, in the family mausoleum in Bielefeld. At the time of his death, his family's fortune was estimated to be around 4.35 billion euros.
