Rudolf Kner (1808-1869) was an Austrian zoologist and ichthyologist who made significant contributions to the fields of zoology and fish biology.

Early Life and Education

Kner was born on August 14, 1808, in Vienna. He initially pursued medical studies at the University of Vienna. However, in 1836, he joined the zoological department of the Imperial Cabinet of Natural History in Vienna as a trainee, where he developed a keen interest in ichthyology.

Academic Career

In 1841, Kner became a professor at the University of Lviv in Western Ukraine. In 1849, he returned to Vienna as a professor at the University of Vienna. Throughout his academic career, he conducted extensive research on fishes and published numerous scientific papers and books.

Scientific Expeditions

Kner embarked on several scientific expeditions to study the fish fauna of different regions. In 1852, he traveled to Istria and the Kvarner Islands in present-day Croatia. Between 1863 and 1867, he explored the waters of Northern Germany, Denmark, and Scandinavia.

Publications and Scientific Contributions

Kner's notable publications include the following:
"Lehrbuch der Zoologie" (Textbook of Zoology, 1849)

"Leitfaden zum Studium der Geologie" (Guide to the Study of Geology, 1851)

In collaboration with Ernst Haeckel, Kner published the monumental work "Die Süßwasserfische der österreichischen Monarchie" (Freshwater Fishes of the Austrian Monarchy, 1858).

Kner's contributions to the fields of zoology and ichthyology were highly influential during his time. He was an exceptional classifier of fishes and possessed a deep understanding of paleontology. His book on the ganoid fishes as a natural order, titled "Über die Ganoiden als natürliche Ordnung" (1867), highlighted his expertise in this area.
