Early Life and Education
Karel Čapek was born in Malé Svatoňovice, Czech Republic. Shortly after his birth, his family relocated to Kutná Hora, where they owned a vinegar factory. Čapek attended school in Kutná Hora, graduating in 1895. In 1898, he completed his studies at a commercial academy in Prague.
Business and Literary Pursuits
Following his education, Čapek joined the family business. From 1910 to 1914, he traveled to Berlin as a sales representative for the factory. During this period, he also began his literary career, publishing essays, poems, and plays.
Military Service and Post-War Career
In 1915, Čapek was called up for military service during World War I. He served in the army until 1916, after which he resumed his duties at the vinegar factory. In the years leading up to the factory's nationalization, Čapek continued to write extensively.
