Biography of Rudolf von Alt

Rudolf von Alt, an Austrian artist, found inspiration for his paintings during his hiking trips across Europe. With his innate talent, he captured the magnificent images of European nature on canvas. Rudolf Alt was the son of the famous artist, lithographer, and watercolorist Jakob Alt. He learned a great deal from his father and further honed his skills as a student at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.

Inspiration from Untouched Nature

The wild and untouched nature always served as the main source of inspiration for Alt. He traveled extensively, primarily on foot, through the Austrian Alps and northern Italy. The breathtaking landscapes he encountered during these journeys were immortalized on canvas using ordinary watercolors. The realism and meticulous attention to detail in Alt's paintings garnered admiration from critics who had seen many artworks.

Architectural Series

Alt's fate led him to Venice in 1833. The architecture of the legendary Italian city made an indelible impression on him, leading to the creation of a series of architectural paintings. This series was well-received by critics and art enthusiasts, especially in Venice itself. However, Alt's true passion remained landscapes. He became renowned for his ability to observe the tiniest details that were crucial for forming the overall picture.

Impressionistic Influence

After living and working in Rome and Naples for some time, Alt traveled to Lombardy, Galicia, Bohemia, Dalmatia, and Bavaria. His journeys took him to Crimea and Sicily as well. Towards the end of his career, Alt became noticeably drawn to Impressionism.

Rudolf von Alt

Rudolf added the prefix 'von' and the title of knight to his name, having already become a famous artist. He passed away on March 12, 1905, at the age of 92. The majority of Rudolf Alt's paintings are displayed in museums in Vienna. A major retrospective exhibition of his works took place in the Albertina gallery from September 2005 to January 2006.
