Early Life and Career
Rudolfs Baltaiskalns was born on February 11, 1932, in Sloka, Latvia, into a working-class family. Due to the First World War, he lived as a refugee in Moscow, where he attended a gymnasium. Upon returning to Latvia, he completed his secondary education privately while working. He studied at the Latvian Dramatic Courses (1927) and became an actor at the Daugavpils Latvian Drama Theatre (1927-1930), Liepaja New Theatre (1930-1933), and National Theatre (1933-1940).
Wartime Roles
During World War II, Baltaiskalns served as Director and Artistic Director of the Youth Theatre (1940-1941) and as an actor and director of the People's Theatre (1941-1944). In 1943, he became the head of the theater studio of the People's Theatre.
Post-War Career
After the war, Baltaiskalns taught acting and was the Artistic Director of the A. Upits Drama Theatre (1944-1951). He worked in various theaters, including the Musical Comedy Theatre (1951-1960), Daugavpils Musical-Drama Theatre (1960-1961), and Valmiera Drama Theatre (1961-1964). From 1955 to the 1980s, he collaborated closely with the Ventspils People's Theatre, frequently staging productions on its stage.
Personal Life and Legacy
Baltaiskalns was married twice, first to actress Lidija Freimane and later to writer Ilze Indrāne. He passed away at the age of 92 on December 1, 1995, and was buried in the Prauliena Cemetery. Throughout his career, Baltaiskalns made significant contributions to the Latvian theater scene as both an actor and director, leaving a lasting impact on generations of artists and audiences.
