Early Life and Career
Ruth Dreifuss was born on January 9, 1940, in St. Gallen, Switzerland. Her family relocated to Bern in 1942 and later settled in Geneva in 1945. She graduated with a degree in economics from the University of Geneva in 1970.
Before pursuing a career in economics, Dreifuss held various jobs, including a hotel receptionist in Ticino, a journalist in Basel, and an assistant at a psycho-social center in Geneva.
Political Career
Dreifuss joined the Social Democratic Party in 1965 and became actively involved in politics. Her political career took off when she was elected as a Federal Councillor to the Swiss Federal Assembly in 1993.
Presidency
In 1999, Dreifuss made history by becoming the first woman President of the Swiss Confederation, succeeding Flavio Cotti. Her presidency was marked by efforts to promote gender equality and social justice.
