Early Life and Education
Early Years and Political ActivismJose Maria Sison was born in the Philippines. In 1969, he joined the Kabataang Makabayan (Nationalist Youth), which was later banned during the Marcos dictatorship.
Communist Party Membership
Sison became a member of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) in 1970. He attended the party's sixth congress in 1973 and was elected to the Central Committee at the eighth congress in 1986.
Rise in the Communist Party
Founding of SIKAPIn 1976, Sison founded the Samahan sa Ika-uunlad ng Kabataang Pilipino (SIKAP), an organization that promoted the advancement of Filipino youth.

At the CPP's ninth congress, Sison was elected to the Political Bureau of the Central Committee.
