Early Life and Military Service
Ruhama Avraham was born on January 29, 1964, in Rishon LeZion, Israel. She served in the Israel Defense Forces, retiring with the rank of corporal.
Political Career
Knesset Member and Committee ChairIn 2003, Avraham was elected to the 16th Knesset as a member of the Likud party. She served on the Finance Committee, the Economic Committee, and the Committee for the Advancement of Women's Status. She also chaired the Subcommittee for the Examination of the Small Business Crisis.
Deputy Minister of Interior
From March 30, 2005, to April 16, 2006, Avraham held the position of Deputy Minister of Interior in the Israeli government.
Kadima Party and Ministerial Roles
Minister Without Portfolio and Minister of TourismIn 2006, Avraham joined Ariel Sharon's new Kadima party and was re-elected to the 17th Knesset. She worked on the Petitions Committee, the Committee for the Advancement of Women's Status, and the Committee on the Rights of the Child. She also served as chair of the Knesset House Committee and joined various lobby groups.
31st Government
In the 31st Israeli government, Avraham served as Minister Without Portfolio from July 4, 2007, to July 14, 2008. She then became Minister of Tourism from July 14, 2008, to March 31, 2009.
Return to the Knesset
Avraham was re-elected to the 18th Knesset as part of the Kadima party. She continued her involvement in various committees and led several lobby groups.
Personal Life
Ruhama Avraham is married with two children and resides in Rishon LeZion. She is fluent in Hebrew, Ladino (the language of Sephardic Jews), and English.
