Gianni Alemanno

Gianni Alemanno is an Italian politician who served as Minister of Agriculture in Silvio Berlusconi's government from 2001-2006 and Mayor of Rome from 2008 to 2013.

Early Political Career

Alemanno began his political career as a member of the far-right Italian Social Movement, becoming the leader of its youth organization. In 1990, he was elected to the Lazio Regional Council, and in 1994, he entered the Italian parliament.

Minister of Agriculture

From 2001 to 2006, Alemanno served as Minister of Agriculture in two Berlusconi cabinets. He implemented policies aimed at promoting Italian agriculture and food products.

Mayor of Rome

First Mayoral Candidacy (2006)

In 2006, Alemanno ran for Mayor of Rome but lost to Walter Veltroni, receiving approximately 36% of the votes.

Second Mayoral Candidacy (2008)

In 2008, after Veltroni's resignation, Alemanno ran again for mayor. He defeated Francesco Rutelli, who had served as mayor in the 1990s, with 53.6% of the votes.
