Rupert Johnson Jr. served in the Marine Corps before pursuing higher education. He earned his Bachelor of Science and Arts degree from Washington & Lee University. In 1947, his father, Rupert Johnson Sr., founded Franklin Distributors, which later transformed into Franklin Resources in 1969.
Career at Franklin Resources
Joining forces with his brother Charles, Rupert Johnson Jr. played a pivotal role in the growth and expansion of Franklin Resources. During the mid-1980s, when many organizations were establishing funds overseas, Franklin Resources continued to offer its services exclusively to American clients. The company provided credit cards, consumer loans, and deposit certificates. Additionally, they acquired $11 million worth of real estate during this time, transforming the organization into a true family business.
Expansion and Acquisitions
In 1992, Franklin Resources acquired Templeton Funds, which provided an excellent opportunity for international expansion. The acquisition of Templeton, Galbraith & Hansberger Ltd. cost the Johnson brothers $913 million but catapulted Franklin Resources to become the fourth-largest investment management company in the United States. Over time, they acquired Heine Securities, owned by Michael Price, for $610 million in 2001. Later that year, Fiduciary Trust also joined Franklin Resources. Currently, the company manages $540 billion in assets and offers its clients a diverse range of 200 investment products.
