Ryan Delahoussaye: Biography of a Musician
Ryan Delahoussaye is a multi-instrumentalist and co-founder of the rock band Blue October. He studied classical violin at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, where he met Justin Furstenfeld and quickly became close friends.
Influences and Musical Style
Classical music and classical composers have had a significant influence on Ryan. He has expressed his admiration for rock concerts he attended, with Nine Inch Nails, Blind Melon, Depeche Mode, and The Rolling Stones being his favorites.
Blue October gained recognition largely due to Ryan's outstanding violin performances, which complement their music. The prominent role of the violin in many songs sets Blue October's sound apart from other contemporary rock bands. Ryan's use of techniques like pizzicato adds a cohesive element to songs such as "Ugly Side," "Clumsy Card House," and "Balance Beam."
Justin Furstenfeld describes Ryan's playing style as extraordinary: "With the violin, Ryan does incredible things. He can create artificial echoes, 'wow-wow' sounds, and slow down the music. It feels like the violin stops being a violin and becomes a different instrument. This is what brings the 'Blue' essence to Blue October. Without him, there wouldn't be such a range of emotions, and I love that."
Collaborations and Teaching
Ryan Delahoussaye occasionally records violin parts for songs by other artists. He played as part of the band "Bayou Roux" and contributed to the recording of their 1999 album "Pass the Rice." Ryan also played the violin on the song "Love Him" from the 2009 album of the band "Language Room," produced by Matt Noveskey. Additionally, he played violin on "Falling by the Wayside" by "People in Planes," "Murder" by "Ours," and has performed with "Hurricane Bells" and "Shiny Toy Guns."
In addition to his musical career, Ryan is a teacher at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Austin, Texas.
Personal Life
In his free time, Ryan resides in Houston, Texas with his wife Kimberly.
