A British Postal Worker's Fight Against Sepsis
At the tender age of 46, Ryan Nulty was living a seemingly healthy life. On October 12, 2018, after completing his usual eight-hour work shift as a postman, he returned home and went to bed.
A Sudden Onset
The following morning, Ryan awoke at 5:30 AM with a gnawing body ache and flu-like symptoms. Experiencing alternating hot and cold flashes, he turned back to sleep, hoping to recover. However, his condition rapidly deteriorated. Ryan began shivering uncontrollably, developed a rash, and his legs turned icy cold—classic symptoms of sepsis, a life-threatening complication of infection that causes the immune system to attack the body's tissues and organs.
Treatment and Coma
Diagnosed with sepsis, Ryan was rushed to the hospital and placed in a medically induced coma in the intensive care unit to protect his organs. During his stay in the coma, Ryan's legs became "completely black" as his body fought the infection.
Coming Out of the Coma
On October 22, Ryan was brought out of the coma, unaware of his surroundings and his condition. He experienced confusion and delirium, believing he was involved in a conspiracy. Despite the severity of his condition, Ryan's sepsis eventually began to improve.
Kidney Failure and Amputation
Transferred to Sutton Hospital, Ryan underwent dialysis for 72 hours to support his failing kidneys. As he regained strength, doctors informed him that he would need to have both of his legs amputated below the knees due to gangrene resulting from the lack of blood flow to his limbs.
A Difficult Decision
Although initially shocked by the news, Ryan gradually came to terms with the inevitable amputation, which was scheduled for December 31 in Brighton.
Returning Home and Support
Following the amputation, Ryan returned home to recuperate, tenderly cared for by his partner, Sharon Sargent. Ryan acknowledges the incredible support he received from Sharon, who assisted him with everyday tasks and provided unwavering emotional support.
A New Chapter with Prostheses
Presently, Ryan is undergoing rehabilitation at Horsham Hospital, steadily regaining his strength in anticipation of receiving prostheses that will enable him to walk again. Despite being unable to resume his previous job as a postman, Ryan remains optimistic about the future.
The Impact of Sepsis
Ryan's experience highlights the often-overlooked dangers of sepsis, which can lead to catastrophic consequences if not promptly diagnosed and treated.
Warning Signs of Sepsis
Recognizing the early signs of sepsis is crucial to preventing potential fatalities. These include:
- Confusion or disorientation
- Severe shivering or muscle pain- Rapid breathing
- No urination for over a day
- Overwhelming sense of impending doom
- Skin rash
